MUSIC THERAPY - available from september 2026

Meet the Music Therapist,

Hannah Thomson

Hannah will qualify as an HCPC-registered music therapist in summer 2026 and is excited to bring music therapy services to schools in the local area. Hannah has extensive experience working with children in educational and performing arts settings, including pupils with special educational needs and mental health challenges.

What is music therapy, and how can it help?

Music therapy is a state-regulated, evidence-based profession. Hannah is trained in the Nordoff-Robbins approach to music therapy. It is person-centred and flexible, enabling us to work collaboratively and creatively with schools to build a service which best suits the needs of the organisation and its pupils.

Our sessions are based upon musical participation, involving an active and collaborative music-making experience between the client and therapist. This can include activities such as improvising using instruments, singing, song-writing, and musical games. Through music, we aim to celebrate how each child uniquely is, whilst also helping them to work towards goals, such as enhancing wellbeing, confidence, expression, communication, focus, regulation and creativity. This tailored support can help the child to thrive emotionally, socially and academically in their school journey.

Who can benefit?

Anyone can benefit from music therapy. Children who might particularly benefit include those who:

  • Have special educational needs, such as autism and ADHD

  • Experience high levels of anxiety and low self-esteem

  • Feel isolated at school

  • Need tailored support (such as with communication, regulation, focus, behaviour)

  • Have challenging home lives

Music therapy is a space where children can experience a shared, creative interaction, which need not necessitate words. There is no pressure to ‘get things right’ in a music therapy session, and there is no need for the child to have prior musical experience. We accept, celebrate and work with each child as they are.
